A true lover of Mediterranean food, I walked into Enigma at the piazza with high expectations of a authentic Greek meal. As I enter the premises, I could not but help noticing the obvious Mediterranean sea side restaurant ambience that is the essence of Enigma.
The clever interior deco has somewhat masked the fact that the restaurant was indeed situated next to a very busy street in Castle Hill. The blue and white interior did create a calmness that I did not expect in the business of Enigma's surroundings.
Settling in, I decided on the set lunch menu which in my opinion was of great value - $29.00 for two courses with wine, Monday to Saturday lunch time only)
The list of entrees were quite extensive, even for that price. A ardent fan of haloumi, I ordered the grilled haloumi cheese which was served with endives, caramelized onions & balsamic reduction. The dish was quite flavoursome and generous in portions. I would have loved a dollop more of that reduction on my haloumi, but nevertheless the dish was a hit in my mouth.
For the main course I opted to try the lamb giouvetsi: a slow braised lamb casserole with fresh herbs served with kritharáki & pickled vegetables. This, I can say without reservation, is one of the best lamb dishes I had tasted in the recent past. The dish is accompanied by krithraki, a rice like grain which is capable of filling you up quite quickly.
A fitting end to this delightful meal was the tasting plate of desserts I ordered. Six types of petite sweets were served on a platter with cream and strawberries. The dish was a pleasure for the eyes and a delight for the taste buds.
Enigma did deliver the authenticity I was hoping for, and it is definitely a place I would take my guests to offer a Mediterranean experience close to home.
