Gelato Messina Bondi Beach

Ready to tuck in

Gelato Messina has turned ice cream loving Sydney siders on their heads, and in a pleasant way. Their ice creams might (just might) convert you into an ice cream lover if you aren't one already. Food for thought. Sorry, Sydney Food Lovers - terrible pun.

One of the designs to suit the area outside the shop

They took their time, and hooray - Gelato Messina has opened up shop at Hall Street on Bondi Beach - right next to the Adina Apartment Hotel in October 2013.

Inside

As you may already be aware, Gelato Messina is located in the following suburbs:

  • Darlinghurst
  • Surry Hills
  • The Star - Pyrmont

  • And now Bondi. Yes, surfers and swimmers can have their Gelato Messina fix in tourist and beach loving central. The catch: well, there isn't one except a steep walk up a hill to fetch yours.

    Nice

The ice cream is still Gelato Messina quality, yet the service is too hit and miss here. So disappointed. Why? The staff first and foremost mention that there are 'specials.' I mean, Gelato Messina - you sell ice to the eskimos. Why the hell do you need a specials board? I am confused. An ice creamery does not need one, and I don't think the price of my two scoops in a cup gelato came out any cheaper by picking one of the flavours from this list.

    The trademark

The service, yeah a bit ordinary. Not memorable at all. A bit cold.

    My cassata at the back

Thankfully my gelato was delicious. Although it melted quite quickly (warm weather, thank you) I loved my scoop of pistachio, and a scoop of cassata.

My pistachio at the front right

I was asked if I wanted to try some ice cream. The Lychee Martini looked promising, yet I wasn't in the mood for anything alcoholic on this occasion. Iv'e tried their Fig & Marsala before. No thanks. Pistachio it was to sample first, and then I was sold. Lovely flavour, so divine. It just melted too quickly. I specifically requested my pistachio to be the bottom scoop in my cup, and not the top. They got it the other way around. I wanted my cassata (vanilla with dark chocolate pieces and crystallised fruits) on top. Oh well, fusspots just had to get over it and move on. So I did.

    Known for their cakes too

Excellent value for money. Pity about the ordinary service.
