RunFeng Dumplings Haymarket

Over the years, Australians seem to have evolved their taste buds to Asian cuisines. After the Japanese Sushi, the next big hit is the Chinese Dumplings.

What do the two have in common to capture our insatiable fondness? Both are compact, healthy, and can be filled with variety. Plus they are relatively cheap too.

Some of the best dumplings can be found right here in Sydney.

RunFeng is a brand new little dumpling shop at the Chinatown Sussex Centre food court that caught my attention.

It might be situated in a food court, but I am hoping it might be a hidden gourmet gem like Gumshara Ramen .

RunFeng has been open for the last two week - as at the time of writing this, and at the moment they are just serving dumplings and steamed buns. The staff indicated that other traditional side dishes and meal varieties are coming soon.

All dumplings and steam buns are made in the kitchen at the back, and are great value for money. For under $10, you will get 16 freshly boiled dumplings, and $5.99 for 3 piping hot steamed buns.

You can mix-n-match your dumplings, or ask them to pan fry them for you. The boiled dumplings are their house speciality, and they are all packed with taste, joy, and healthy goodness.

RunFeng has a simple, uncluttered decor, and is as basic as it comes.

Here, you will find dumplings come in all different flavours. Some classic and some innovative. They have years of experience in making these fun size treats.

Try the Fish & Chive or the Pork, Dried Shrimp & Bok Choy for a filling meal; or the Cucumber Prawn if you have a lighter palate.

The prawn, cucumber and egg dumplings are fresh and cooked to an al dente standard. Add some vinegar soy sauce and chilli to intensify the flavour ten times.

The dumpling size is on the small-side, and not as large and plump as I liked. The serving presentation lacks some thought and that wow factor. But they makes up for that in deliciousness and from the friendliness of the staff.

The best things come in small packages, and dumplings are the new comfort food this winter.

The next best thing about no-frills is that you will leave with a happy belly and a happy wallet.
