Shortgrain Canteen Shop Surry Hills

Shortgrain Canteen Shop Surry Hills

Shortgrain is located at Hunt street Surry Hills, and is without a doubt one of my favourite Asian fusion restaurants in Sydney. As you walk into the small 32 seated space, the aromatic scents of lemongrass and chilli seduces the senses in inviting you to food heaven.

The must have Red Beef curry

A modest building of concrete minimalist design, Shortgrain is the little sister of the big brother Longrain restaurant. The decor is sophisticated. Lunchtime is an array of suits and ties, a mecca for the power lunchers.

A simplistic and stylised dining experience

The menu offers a variety of Thai fusion meals to choose from, and is ever changing with the seasonal ingredients. Designed to share. Why not order a bit of everything from the menu, and share with a fellow food lover?

Whichever flavour combination you choose to indulge your senses in - you can’t go wrong. I have never had anything which I didn’t enjoy off the menu. Every meal has been an explosion of spices, and the freshest ingredients possible.

The famous Longrain Bunker Bar. Amazing cocktails.

To start the culinary adventure, try the Spiced Nuts ($5) and the Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings with Sweet Chilli ($4.50).
For the larger lunch time meals, The Red Curry Beef with wild ginger served with a roti ($15) is melt in your mouth tender, best served with some jasmine rice ($1 pp). For a seafood option, the Seared Salmon with roast chilli and ginger ($15) is tops, or for something a bit lighter - the Hot and Sour salad is a must have - with a delicious ensemble of pork, mint, chilli and roasted rice ($15).

Fresh, Feisty and fabulous The Hot and Sour Salad.

For those who love their greens, the Chinese Broccoli in Oyster Sauce ($5) could be a meal on it’s own: so fresh that words cannot even describe.
The Vanilla Tapioca ($4) is the perfect ending to a spice infused meal. In the warmer seasons the mango variety is a must have.

Delicious Chinese Broccoli in Oyster Sauce

My favourites would have to be the Red Curry Beef and the Hot and Sour salad. Both meals offer something different in terms of flavour and texture. Definitely transporting the taste buds to nirvana and back.

Shortgrain does not take bookings - however a take away option is available, and is ideal for lunch on the go. A fantastic eating ground for anyone wanting to sample some of the best Asian cooking Sydney has to offer. However, not the warmest of service admittedly from the staff, but I am prepared to overlook this for the divinity that is delivered on the plate.

The inclusion of the Shortgrain shop is a great addition to the overall dining experience, with wonderful take home produce such as the Chilli Jam, Yellow Bean dressing and Three flavoured sauce ($10-$18 300ml) available to purchase.
