Summer Hill Sweets Summer Hill
A little over a year ago Summer Hill Sweets opened their doors to the public at 123 Smith Street. The passion for cooking and the dream to have her own store however, began many years ago for owner Catherine. Having a dream and having to raise three children under five at the same time was difficult and like a large majority of women, Catherine’s dream waited until she had raised her children before it was time for her to follow her dream. Meeting and speaking to her was like having known someone for a long time. She invites you not only into her shop, but also into a glimpse of her life and how she came to own Summer Hill Sweets in Summer Hill. This was one of those places where you walked in, and for whatever reason you felt like you were home.
There is a phrase that goes
“Like a kid in a candy store.” I was that kid today - as at the time of writing this, and I had just stepped into my childhood. There were lollies and chocolates as far as the eye could see, and the aroma of freshly baked cupcakes drew me instantly.
The beautiful old fashioned furniture was the standout for me in the store. Different tones of brown, and grainy timber against the green walls worked perfectly together. Each piece of furniture was different from the other. There were a variety of tables, plate racks, writing desks, and a rustic chair all blending together, further adding to the charm of the shop.
Then there were the sweets. Caramels; fudge; freckles; Jaffas; nut and fruit filled nougat; shortbread; marshmallow and honeycomb, as well as plain and chocolate coated liquorice. The list of available products is endless. You will have to go and see for yourself. They also stock a selection of Gluten Free products.
There is a kitchen on the premises where goods are baked fresh on a daily basis. The flavour may change on the day, however the taste and quality remains the same. On a daily basis you can purchase a variety of Shortbreads from Plain to Choc chip, Coconut Lime, Lemon Zest, Macadamia and White chocolate - as well as Pecan and Passionfruit.
Also baked daily are cupcakes with flavours that include Vanilla with Lemon butter, Passionfruit butter, as well as Raspberry and Apple Cinnamon. Melting Moments, Jam Drops and Fig, Walnut and Apricot tarts are also a prominet menu feature.
All baked goods are made on the premises, however Summer Hill Sweets also stock a variety of products from local manufacturers including Sweet Patisserie, Blossom – sweet treats, Phillippa’s, Green Grove Organics, and The Vegan Tea House.
It goes without saying that I didn’t leave empty handed. I purchased a beautiful set of Laura Ashley measuring cups, and one Marshmallow Burger. This was two buns of marshmallow with a layer of chocolate in the middle, covered in toasted coconut, yum. The marshmallow was light and fluffy, with a hint of chocolate and the slight crunch of the toasted coconut. Definitely worth a try, however I do suggest you share. As beautiful as it was, it was a little too sweet.
Summer Hill Sweets also have a selection of homewares, furnishings and cook books. All their chocolates and lollies are beautifully wrapped, making them the perfect gift for someone special.
If you are in the Summer Hill area, I would highly recommend stopping in at the store. Not only will you be guaranteed of beautiful, high quality products; you will also be receiving the best customer service. Catherine is a reminder that before we became mothers - we all had dreams, and even though we have to put them on hold - life really is about timing, and this is Catherine’s time to shine.
