The Pie Tin Bakery Newtown

Meat pies have always been a tradition for Australian families. They're filled with mince in a meaty gravy and encased in a flaky pastry that is sometimes soggy on the bottom. Accompanying celebrations like the football grand final and Easter shows, Australians have always enjoyed a good pie.

The Pie Tin seeks to break the Aussie mince pie tradition by offering a selection of pies in new and interesting flavours which are lovingly made at their Newtown bakery.

The Pie Tin Bakery.

The Pie Tin has a selection of both sweet and savoury pies with no less than twenty different varieties. Unfortunately, not all are available at the same time, with the bakery only offering a selection of pies each day. This means that although your favourite may not always be available, it may be an excellent opportunity to try something different which might become a new favourite. You can however pre-order family sized pies to ensure that you get exactly what you want. The bakery is committed to quality and therefore their pies are made from quality seasonal produce with artisanal skill.

On offer at the bakery are pies such as slow roasted shredded pork, apple and barbecue sauce, North African style slow roasted mutton with chermoula and steak, and cheese and smoky bacon.

The beef brisket pie is tender, with a thick gravy and flaky pastry that has all of the essence of a Sunday roast. The creamy chicken with hot mustard and mushrooms is surprisingly spicy, but pops of sweet peas sing of spring and are perfect for this time of year. If you are missing the traditional pie, they also have classic mince on offer. If you decide to dine in at the bakery, the pies can be paired with a selection of artisan beers and wines that are on offer.

The beef brisket pie includes everything a good pie should have tender meat, thick, luscious gravy and golden, flaky pasty.

The bakery itself is small, with very few tables. On a Friday night a crowd gathers, surprisingly not of those in suits and ties, but of people kicking off the weekend with a hearty feed. You also spot a few people grabbing a quick and easy dinner before heading home to their families.

With a delicious variety of pies on offer, The Pie Tin is definitely worth a visit. Stick to tradition and go with a classic mince pie, or step outside the box and try something new - who knows, you might find yourself with a new favourite.
