Vanilla Cupcakery on Kingsgrove Road, Kingsgrove.

Shops in Kingsgrove are a bit like the movie title The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Perhaps this is why it is a shopping strip in transition - with a new Woolworths recently opening, the first big store to open in the area; it’s sure to have a big influence on Kingsgroves' dynamic.

Nestled in a busy corner of Kingsgrove Road is the store/café called Vanilla Cupcakery.

Baked From Scratch the way it should be

As you walk into this bright, airy store you’ll notice the white décor and the signs saying the food is baked fresh daily and from scratch.

I have been a few times on a Monday morning. The display window is never quite full at this time. I assume it is at busier times.

Sitting down for a coffee and cupcake, I received friendly, efficient service with a smile. I am very particular about service, because often, that’s what makes all the difference from one store to the next.

Lots to choose from, except on Monday mornings.

I will admit I’m not a cupcake fanatic in this time when cupcake stores have popped up all over the place. However I was impressed by the range on offer. The proof, of course, is in the pudding, or in this case the cupcake.

Rocky Road cupcake

I ordered a rocky road cupcake, which at $3.80, was one of the pricier ones - with the others going for $3.50 each. You can also get Petite cupcakes at $1.50 each, however there’s a note added on the board that says that these need to be pre-ordered. Other notable options included Tim Tam, Carrot, Cinnamon and the ubiquitous Red Velvet.

I quite like the minimal interior decorations

The store itself has just three tables inside which no doubt can be expanded when necessary, and one table outside, which gives you a fetching view of busy Kingsgrove Road.

You can have High Tea for $26.95 per person, minimum four people. They can custom design cupcakes depending on a theme you might have.

Not the greatest way to display Macarons

The coffee was okay. They use Portioli, and comes in a choice of three sizes. They also sell macarons (who doesn’t) and a small range of gifts.

You can order cupcakes by the box load. With so many different flavours, you might be tempted to try them all. They also supply cupcakes to outlets around Sydney.

So, in conclusion, the big question is: Is Vanilla Cupcakery good, bad or ugly? I’m pleased to say it’s good/.
